Nekbat (2026) is an Iranian filmed theatre production directed by Pouya Saeedi and based on American playwright Stephen Belber’s acclaimed play Tape. Although the stage production was originally performed at Tehran’s Iran Shahr Theatre in 2024, its filmed-theatre release brings the acclaimed performance to a wider audience through online distribution.
The story follows John, a young filmmaker whose work is accepted into the Lansing Film Festival. After John travels to the festival, his former university friend Vince arrives to meet him at a small motel. What begins as a seemingly ordinary reunion soon develops into an intense confrontation over a disturbing incident from their shared past. When Amy, another person connected to both men, becomes part of the encounter, each character presents a different version of what really happened.
With a confined setting and dialogue-driven storytelling, Nekbat gradually reveals secrets, lies, resentment, and unresolved emotional wounds. The production explores themes of friendship, betrayal, guilt, morality, memory, and the ways people reshape the past to protect themselves. The cast includes Kazem Seyahi, Mojtaba Pirzadeh, and Setareh Pesyani, whose performances give the tense psychological drama considerable emotional depth.
Overall, Nekbat is a social psychological drama focused on truth, memory, and the complicated consequences of deception.
